Castle Rock, Colo. -- A neighbor reported a structural fire at 2:18 p.m. on Christmas Eve at 931 Coral Court in Castle Rock, Colo. just north of the Town's namesake.
Two children were watching television downstairs when the screen suddenly went dark. The children hurried upstairs to tell their parents when they saw smoke. A neighbor, also seeing smoke, came over to help all family members, two parents and four children, and pets evacuate the house safely.
Luckily, there were no injuries and Christmas presents were salvaged.
The fire was extinguished within approximately 30 minutes by 31 firefighters from Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department, South Metro and Franktown Fire Districts. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but there doesn't seem to be anything suspicious about it. A woodburning fireplace was in use and will be looked at as part of the investigation.
There is extensive damage to the attic and upper portions of the house. The initial estimated loss appears to be between $125,000 to $150,000.
The Castle Rock Police Department, Castle Rock Victim's Assistance, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and Red Cross Disaster Relief also responded to the scene.
