At 3:43 am, Sunday, December 11, 2005, the Olney Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at J.D. Hurn & Son Lumber Company in Olney, Illinois.
While enroute to the incident, flames were visible coming from the East end of the old store. The 80' x 115' building was being used for storage. Heavy black smoke was "puffing" from the West end of the structure upon arrival with "staining" at all the roof joints.
There was a heavy fire condition on the entire East end of the building with the South side exterior walls starting to glow.
Firefighters hooked a 5" supply line onto a hydrant at the entrance to the lumber yard before proceeding to the structure. Initial attack was made with two 1 3/4" hoselines and a 2 1/2" hoseline. A master stream device was used intermittently as water was available.
A second pumper was staged three blocks away and was supplying water from a hydrant to the department
