EAST AMHERST NY - December 4, 2003 --- East Amherst Volunteer Firefighters responded to the report of a car fire inside a garage just before 4pm today. The attached garage was well involved in fire when the first East Amherst and Swormville fire units arrived at the corner of Prince of Wales Court and Promenade Lane.
East Amherst Acting Chief Jim Quigley transmitted a second alarm which brought Main-Transit's FAST team, Getzville fire units and a ladder tower from Williamsville to the scene.
Heavy fire spread from the garage and ripped through the remainder of the structure. Main Transit's FAST team was put to work assisting in the fire fight and Clarence Center's FAST team was moved up from their original standby position. Interior operations were suspended while Williamsville's tower ladder directed dual streams into the structure which, along with several fireground master streams effectively knocked down the bulk of the flames.
At around 6pm, Chief Quigley reported to Amherst Fire Control that the fire was out but that heavy overhaul and salvage operations were continuing. The entire structure suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. The residents had escaped the fire safely and no firefighter injuries were reported at the time of this initial report. Several Amherst and Clarence fire companies covered stations for the working crews.
Chief Jim Quigley and Amherst Fire Investigators estimate damage to the structure and contents to exceed $400,000 according to local news reports this evening.
