At about 11am, on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, a 911 call reported a fire on the roof of a 1-story commercial strip shopping center in College Park.

Prince George's County Firefighters and paramedics responded to the 9900 block of Rhode Island Avenue in College Park and encountered a 1-story, 4-store commercial strip with heavy fire coming through the roof.

The strip mall is attached at one end by a 2-story office/commercial building and a City of College Park Recreation Center located just 10 feet away at the other end.

The fire was well advanced throughout the common attic/roof area of the commercial strip as firefighters initiated operations to extinguish the fire as well as protecting the exposures on each side to prevent the fire from extending into those buildings as well.

A second alarm was sounded bringing additional firefighters and paramedics to the scene. Sixty-five firefighters and paramedics operated for nearly 45 minutes to knock the bulk of the fire down.

No injuries occurred.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire loss has not yet been established.
