On Friday September 5 Green Bay Fire Department battled a fire on an abandoned railroad bridge.
Battalion 1 called dispatch reporting a fire near the railroad bridge at the corner of Adams and Porlier streets. Engine 1 was first dispatched and arrived to find fire had taken hold of the east end of a railroad swing bridge, and requested another engine for a supply line. Engine 2 was dispatched to lay the supply line. The balance of the first alarm was then called, bringing Ladder 2 and Rescue 2. Soon after Support Unit 3 was called for air bottles.
Crews stretched hand lines onto the bridge to start extinguishment. Cellar nozzles were also placed on the bridge to access fire under the beams. Engine 3 was called to put the fire department boat in the water, and a hand line was lowered into the boat to also access the fire underneath. Crews quickly brought the fire under control but remained on scene for an extended period of time.
There was one firefighter injury requiring transport for a minor injury. The fire is still under investigation.
