The structure was a company that specialized in wood cabinetry manufacturing and household appliance sales. The fire began in the paint shop portion of the building, and then spread to the warehouse and showroom areas. The fire was first paged out to the fire department at approximately 0200 hours as a first alarm.
Law enforcement in the area reported that flames were already showing through the roof. Shortly after the arrival of the first 2 departments, it was raised to a second alarm, then a third, and finally a fourth alarm. In all, 10 area fire departments from Dare County and Currituck County responded.
The Kitty Hawk Fire Department was on scene for approximately 14 hours. 6 firefighters were transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion and/or dehydration. All were checked out and released.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
