August 15, 2003-An elderly man was rescued by Providence firefighters and taken to a local hospital after a fire destroyed his apartment at the Hillcrest Village Apartments.
The fire broke out shortly after 1100hrs in the 6-story complex and was contained to the one apartment. Engine 15 arrived to find smoke showing from the 3rd floor. Engine companies stretched lines from the standpipe while members of Ladders 6, 2 and the Special Hazards searched the fire apartment, adjacent apartments and the floors above.
Due to the heavy smoke conditions, Incident Commanders directed companies not to evacuate the entire building but rather protect in place and have the residents not affected remain in their apartments. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
With temperatures close to 90 degrees, additional units were called and the first due companies were rotated out for rehab.
