Units from the Santa Clara County Fire Department, San Jose Fire Department, and the Saratoga Fire Department responded to a report of smoke and flames from a single story home in Cupertino, California at 7am on August 17, 2005.
While units were en route to the location multiple calls were received with at least one caller indicating that there was possibly one wheelchair bound resident still inside the structure. Upon their arrival, firefighters commenced an immediate direct attack on the fire, called a second alarm, and conducted an initial search. It was determined that no one remained in the home.
Although all persons were accounted for, there were five dogs that required rescue, including one animal that was saved by Firefighter Tim Hager of the Santa Clara County Fire Department. According to a Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy, Hagar exited the structure with the dog in his arms, while conducting CPR and rescue breathing. The dog was successfully resuscitated.
The structure was severely damaged and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
