South Mills, N.C. -- Shortly after 3 p.m.on Saturday, July 2, 2005, a severe lightening storm moved through Camden County, North Carolina.
The Trinity United Methodist Church located in South Mills was struck by lighting. Firefighters from South Mills and Newland volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze.
Once on scene, they found the steeple of the church fully involved. The firefighters quickly used two truck mounted deck guns to knock the fire down in opposing directions.
Several hand lines were stretched as crews entered the structure to check for extension. A mutual aid call for a ladder truck from Elizabeth City to reach the top of the steeple was requested.
