WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Firefighters in the nation's capital battled a one-alarm blaze May 17 that heavily damaged a fraternity house on the campus of George Washington University.

There was heavy smoke showing from the 2.5 story semi-detached brick row structure at 605 21st St.  NW when first units arrived.

As firefighters began opening up, they found flames in the second floor walls and raging in the cockloft overhead. At one point, heavy fire broke through the roof.

Despite severe conditions, an interior attack was able to contain the blaze after a 20 minute firefight.

The two occupants of the residence escaped without injury. Six engines, three trucks¸ a heavy rescue, two battalions, an air unit, the operations deputy, and several EMS units and fire investigators were assigned to this incident.
