Arcata Fire District personnel responded to a working structure fire at an apartment complex at 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 5. While responding, they were advised that people were jumping from balconies to escape the fire. Quick action by Arcata police officers aided in the evacuation of four apartment buildings. One resident was injured and one firefighter suffered a small facial burn in the incident.

While responding, they were advised that people were jumping from balconies to escape the fire. Quick action by Arcata police officers aided in the evacuation of four apartment buildings. One resident was injured and one firefighter suffered a small facial burn in the incident.
The fire progressed through the original building and into the exposed, second unit. Firefighters were able to place master stream appliances in position to stop the fire spread. Mutual aid companies from the City of Eureka and Humboldt Fire District also responded to the scene. In all, 36 firefighters responded with 6 engines, two aerials and a rescue truck.
The fire is of suspicious origin and may be related to a series of dumpster and trash fires that have been occurring in the Arcata area.
