At 3:36 pm on May 23, Baton Rouge Fire Department (BRFD) units were dispatched to a reported fire at an abandoned two story school.
Upon arrival of Engine 2, the Captain reported heavy smoke and fire, and requested a second alarm.
Firefighters were able to gain access and quickly knock down the fire, limiting damage to only two classrooms.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the initial attack.
Units were on scene approximately 2 1/2 hours. They were called back to the scene at 8:37 pm for a rekindle.
Heavy smoke and heat greeted the crews as they entered the school. It was determined that the fire was burning in the walls and sub-floor. Due to the age of the building (80 years oold), and that it was set for demolition, crews were pulled out and a second alarm was called.
Firefighters set up defensive positions for the rest of the night and stayed on scene until 6pm the next day.
Several collapses occurred, but no injuries were reported from these collapses.
The original fire was ruled suspicious and possibly arson by BRFD Fire Investigators.
