Charlotte, North Carolina Fire Department was dispatched for a MVA overturned on the westbound lane of E. Independence Blvd. on March 12, 2005.
E64 was first on scene and reported an overturned pickup truck on its roof. L1, E3, R3 and B1 were all responding at this time. Due to the nature of the crash, the entire roof section of the pickup was crushed down to the head rests, making it impossible for the arriving companies to check on the driver and passenger. For about 10 minutes the occupants of the truck were locked out of the world.
As companies started to arrive, each went to work. E64 took care of protecting members with a charged 1 1/2 off of L1. L1, E3 and the remaining crew of E64 went about stabilizing the truck and attempting to make contact with the drivers. Once R3 arrived, their crew went into work along with members of L1. With the help of spreaders, cutters and stabilizers, companies were able to free the driver and passenger in about 20 minutes.
