A family of four escaped an early-morning house fire this week after being alerted by smoke alarms in Stuyvesant, N.Y.
The blaze, at 956 Route 9J, quickly consumed the century-old home despite several efforts to deploy hoselines and knock down the heavy fire conditions.
A nearby river was used to establish a water supply, which required the railroad to suspend operations during the fire.
The fire required resources from a dozen area departments. Extreme weather lessened the time that crews could work and a rehab unit was called in from Greenport.
Resources came from: Castleton, Ghent, Greenport, Niverville, Schodack Landing, Stuyvesant Falls, Stockport, Stottville Valatie Fire Department and Valatie Rescue Squad, West Ghent.
