On Monday, January 13, 2003, at 2037 hours firefighters from Monelison Volunteer Fire Department received a call for a structure fire at 130 East Perch Road, in Amherst County. The initial dispatch included a dual response involving Pedlar Volunteer Fire Department.

Amherst County Sheriff Deputies and Monelison firefighters arrived within minutes and found a two story wood frame house fully involved with a report of one person injured. The tenant of the house sustained second degree burns over fifteen percent of his body and was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital by Monelison Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Due to a limited water supply in the area, a second alarm was struck bringing a mutual aid tanker and engine from Big Island Fire Department. The engine was used at a dry hydrant located one mile from the fire and the tanker for water supply.

Monelison Fire responded with 3 engines, 1 tanker and one squad truck. Monelison Rescue responded with one ambulance and one rescue truck and Pedlar Fire responded with one tanker.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes with much overhaul needed afterward.
