On February 5, 2005, a HazMat incident occurred near mile marker 231 in Virginia that shut down I-81 in both directions for approximately seven hours.

Area fire departments that responded were:
Weyers Cave Vol. Fire Co., Verona Vol. Fire Co., Bridgewater Vol. Fire Co., Shenandoah Valley Region Airport Fire & Rescue, Grottoes Vol. Rescue Squad, Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, DEQ, EPA and the Level 3 Regional HazMat Team. The HazMat Team consists of firefighters from the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, and counties of Augusta and Rockingham.
