On Sunday, April 18 at approximately 5:45 a.m., units of the City of Santa Clara Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a fully engulfed, single-story residential structure at 1044 Homestead Road.
The crew of Engine 1 declared the incident a working structure fire, with heavy smoke and flames issuing from three sides of the 1,800 square foot duplex. An aggressive interior attack was initiated while firefighters worked to confirm that all occupants had escaped the structure.
Once it had been determined that all residents were safely evacuated, Battalion Chief Tom Evans, the incident commander, ordered all crews out of the building as conditions deteriorated. Multiple attack lines were stretched and placed into operation at points along the exterior of the structure.
As the fire began to darken down, firefighters from Truck 2 resumed vertical ventilation operations, while crews re-entered the structure and continued the fire attack operation.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the original fire building with no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
