On December 20, 2004, the Suffolk Dept. of Fire & Rescue responded to a possible structure fire only one block from Station 1, fire headquarters.
Battalion Chief Jack Knight arrived within seconds of the initial call and reported heavy smoke showing from a two story single family dwelling. First arriving companies forced entry into the structure and quickly started knocking down the fire and reported partial collapse of the first floor.
Fire quickly spread within the balloon construction walls to the second floor and attic. Two family dogs were rescued by the ladder company performing the primary search, homeowners were not home at the time of the fire.
No injuries were reported as crews were faced with temperatures in the low 20's and wind chills in the single digits. The department responded with 1 Battalion Chief, 2 engine companies, 1 ladder, 1 heavy rescue bringing 12 personnel to the scene.
