The tones sounded shortly after 3 p.m. on March 7 for a possible structure fire at 109 Johnson St. in Springfield, Mass.
Upon arrival, Engine 3 and Ladder 3 first thought they had a delayed furnace ignition on their hands. Once crews made it to the first floor however, it was evident that a basement fire had begun to climb up the void spaces in this balloon frame homes' walls.
Companies went to work stretching a handline into the basement and an additional handline to the first floor to cut off extension. They were able to bring the fire under control within a half hour.
Extensive overhaul was needed on all floors of the home to ensure total extinguishment, requiring companies to remain on scene for over an hour and a half.
One firefighter received a minor injury to his hand while operating at the scene and was treated by on scene paramedics. The fire is currently under investigation by the Springfield Fire Department's Arson Squad.
