In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 14, 2004 Racine Wisconsin firefighters from Engines 2 and 5, Quint 8, Rescue 8, Car 41 (Command) and Car 43 (Safety) were dispatched at 0208hrs on a report of a home on fire at 2700 Douglas Avenue.
First due Quint 8 and Rescue 8 on arrival found a two-story wood frame residence with heavy fire showing from the second floor windows at the front of the home. Fire crews battled the blaze for over two hours before being able to bring the fire under control.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation; however one possible cause is that a cat may have knocked over a halogen lamp that had been left on upstairs. Damage to the home estimated at over $60,000.
A resident of the home had returned home from work around 0115hrs, went upstairs, turned on the lamp, placed a telephone call and left the residence after about 15-minutes. The fire was discovered about 30-minutes later.
The displaced residents of the home were being assisted by the SE Wisconsin Tri-County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Fire Units on scene included Engines 2, 5, 6 and 9, Truck 1, Quint 8, Rescue 8, Car 41 (Command), Car 43 (Safety) and Car 65 (Rehab Support Unit) operated by the Racine Fire Bells.
