Several St. Paul fire crews left the scene of one house fire to tackle a second one less than a mile away on Tuesday.
Units were dispatched to the 1100 block of Galtier Street at 1:50 p.m. for a report of smoke from a house. Several of the units assigned to the fire were just picking up from the scene of a house fire in the 1000 block of Victoria St.
The first-due unit found dense smoke pushing from both floors of the duplex and fire was showing from the rear on the first floor.
They deployed several handlines to hold the fire to the kitchen, where the blaze started. Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said the fire started when a resident was cooking with grease.
The crew of the medic unit treated and transported a woman and child, who were in the home when the fire broke out, for smoke inhalation.
Eight companies, with 25 firefighters, responded to the fire, which was under control in 15 minutes.
