An early morning fire destroyed a house in the West Oaks Village subdivision in Richmond, Texas just outside of Houston. Neighbors reported the two-story brick home on fire at approximately 4 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 3.
Heavy smoke was visible as all companies of the Community Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. Flames were raging through the roof when the first engine arrived. Crews engaged in an offensive attack and protected exposures. The situation got critical and a firefighter almost fell through the upper level floor of the home. The roof was collapsing and command ordered to evacuate the structure immediately.
Command called for a second alarm and mutual-aid was requested from neighboring West I-10 Fire Department of Katy. The fire was fought in defensive mode throughout the morning and was finally put out as the sun was rising, just past 6 a.m.
Approximately 40 volunteer firefighters, six engines, one ladder and a rehab truck worked the scene.
Fortunately, the home was vacant and no major injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was deemed suspicious. Arson investigators were called to the scene and cause of is under investigation.
