Firefighters were called to 717 Strom Dr., in West Dundee, Ill. the night of Friday, June 25. Within minutes, they were dealing with a smoke-filled, six-unit apartment building.Fire was blowing heavily out one of the second-story units. At the same time, people on balconies at the opposite side of the building were getting ready to jump.Firefighters were able to calm the residents down enough to wait for ladders to arrive. After five people were rescued from their baclonies, three were transported to area hospitals.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to get the fire under control. Resources from more than 12 departments were used.
