Fire was in a Five Story Brick 50 x 60 foot Brick building with a penthouse and roof deck. Former Eaton Hotel built in 1887 and turned in to a 19 unit condo building in 1982.
First alarm was a central station at 7:37 p.m. Total apparatus response was 18 engines, eight ladders and three tower ladders one heavy rescue with a number of support vehicles and over 160 fire fighters fighting the fire.
Fire originated in the kitchen of one of the first floor condos with rapid expansion up rear stairway (former elevator shaft) to the roof. There were two fatalities, one male DOA at hospital due to heart attack and one female found in rubble the next day, they were husband and wife. They were the seventh and eighth fire deaths in the city of Boston for the year 2007. Six adjunct residences were evacuated, who along with many of the 28 residents of the fire building were being given temporary shelter in the surrounding neighbors' houses
Multiple rescues were made and after an exhaustive interior attack that lasted 45 minutes, the firefighters were ordered out of the building and an exterior attack was commenced. The fire remains undetermined at this time. The all out was given on Wednesday afternoon of Jan. 22. The initial loss is set at $5 million.
