A structure fire that excels in danger, mobile home fires present extreme safety challenges. On Oct 13,2007, North Carolina's Bravest went head to head with a mobile home fully involved.
The tone sounded at 2100 hours announcing a possible fire at 130 Rose Street in Rockingham.
Responding were East Rockingham Fire Department Engine 808,Engine 802 and Tanker 803. On a Mutual Aid call Cordova Fire and Rescue responded with Tanker 952 and Squad 957.
Scene upon arrival revealed the mobile home structure was fully involved and had heavy fire and smoke showing. The fire had already consumed the living room, kitchen and one bedroom.
Firefighters faced several challenges. The structure was approximately 72 ft in length, occupied by five residents and was filled with furnishings and stored items.
Firefighters attempted an interior attack but was pushed by excessive heat. Crews then repositioned at the rear of the structure and made a second attempt at an interior attack. Because of the fire conditions the operation was then switched to defensive.
Officials said the fire was difficult to extinquish because of the contents.
Fire was out after about two hours, damage was extensive. The cause is under investigation by the SBI.
