Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department units were dispatched for a possible second-story deck fire around 6:11 a.m. on Aug. 18, in Brittany Commons. The first crews on the scene at 6:18 observed there was heavy fire through the roof, and requested a second alarm.

The pumper crew stretched a 400' pre-connected garden apartment leader-line, and started an aggressive interior attack. In addition to a primary search performed by the truck crew, RIT was established by third engine company. During the fire attack, a partial roof collapse resulted in the evacuation tones. A defensive attack was performed from two ladder pipes. Around 8:15 a.m., the incident was determined to be under control.

Firefighters helped many homeowners remove personal belongings. The last pumper cleared the scene at 3:55 p.m.

Eight apartments were damaged from either fire, smoke, or water damage.
