On Sunday, March 30, firefighters from Maryland and Delaware were called to fight a nine-alarm fire along Ocean City's historic boardwalk.
The fire was noticed shortly after 12 p.m. and the initial 9-1-1 call reported smoke coming from the Dough Roller restaurant at 604 South Atlantic Avenue.
The first arriving companies reported fire showing from Side D and began an aggressive attack. Customers and employees in the restaurant were evacuated by Ocean City police, and it was reported that a young girl was also removed from an apartment above the restaurant.
With assistance from wind off the Atlantic coast, the fire had made considerable extension into Sunset Beachwear as well as the Playland arcade. Private apartments above the commercial occupancies were also affected.
As the alarms progressed, regular vehicle traffic on Route 50 eastbound into Ocean City was closed except for responding apparatus. Numerous master streams from aerial apparatus, wagonpipes, portable deckguns and 2 1/2-inch handlines were put in use to darken down the main body of fire.
By 2:30 p.m. the fire was declared under control. One firefighter was transported to Atlantic General Hospital for a minor eye injury. Over three dozen companies from various Maryland and Delaware counties were alerted to either respond to the fire or transfer to other stations.
The Ocean City Fire Marshal Office is investigating the cause.
