New Orleans FFs Battle a Raging Four-Alarmer

New Orleans firefighters battled a raging four-alarm fire that gutted a vacant apartment building in the storm ravaged East section of the city.

An off-duty chief traveling along the I-10 highway on Friday, June 22, was the first to spot flames coming from the two-story apartment building, and radioed dispatch for the first alarm assignment.

Units arrived to find fire in full possession of the structure, and quickly sounded additional alarms. An exterior attack was mounted. The building eventually collapsed.

Among the units responding were 10 engines, two trucks, rescue squad, hazmat, three district chiefs, deputy chief and several other support units, including the "flying squad."
