Massachusetts firefighters saved the day when they rescued several cats from a two-alarm fire on Nov. 23.
Leominster firefighters received a call for a fire in a second-floor apartment at 2 Cotton St. Smoke was visible out the rear of the building. Acting Deputy Chief Alfred Kirouac called for the working fire.
With three engines and one ladder working, the fire, which had started up on the second floor, had now extended up into the ceiling area. Chief Ronald Pierce was on the fire ground and notified of the spread of the fire.
At this time, a second alarm was transmitted sending an engine and tower ladder from the City of Fitchburg along with an engine from the Town of Lunenburg to the fire.
As Leominster Ladder 1's crew vented the roof, heavy smoke was pushing out.
Once the fire was knocked, seven out of nine cats had been rescued and turned over to their owner.
One firefighter was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
