Shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, Kernersville E-43, E-41 and Colfax Quint 16 were dispatched to 129 Croyden Drive for a house fire. Smoke visible from headquarters station which is several miles away. The battalion chief requested E-42 and FCEMS to respond and put E-32 (Piney Grove) and E-25/17 (Talley's/City View) on stand-by.
The 4,000 sq ft house had heavy smoke and flames showing. An initial interior attack with crews using a 2 1/2-inch hand line was attempted as other lines were being put into operation.
Due to the amount of fire and heat, coupled with the threat of collapse, crews were advised to go to a defensive operation. E-25 and Truck 41 were requested. Quint 16 and Truck 41 crews utilized their aerial master streams to knock the main fire to the point ground personnel were able to extinguish the remaining flames.
Forsyth County FD Air 9 personnel responded to fill air bottles while Forsyth County EMS and Winston-Salem Rescue Squad crews provided rehab.
The Kernersville Fire Marshal's Office received assistance from the Winston-Salem Fire Marshal's Office and their new K-9, Shazam. The investigation into the cause of $950,000 fire is continuing.
