Fort Collins, CO -- A family was left homeless after a two-alarm fire damaged a large portion of their home Saturday in west Fort Collins.
At 3:47 p.m., Poudre Emergency Communications received reports of a garage totally involved in fire and the occupants, who were home at the time the fire started, trying to extinguish it with a garden hose.
The first engine arrived to find heavy fire coming from the front of the garage and also extending into the attic area of the living space. The fire was immediately upgraded to a second alarm to bring additional help.
An aggressive attack was initiated along with other tasks such as a search for potential victims and ventilation of the interior of the house. The fire, which heavily damaged the garage and attic space, was stopped from entering the living area. Firefighters were able to save the occupants belongings in the living area from fire and heat damage.
PFA has partnered with Homewood Suites in south Fort Collins for one night's hotel stay for the family, which did not have homeowner's insurance. The Red Cross will pay for three additional nights of lodging, as well as some clothing and food.
Poudre Fire Authority responded five engine companies, two ladder truck companies, two battalion chiefs, and one incident representative for a total of twenty-seven personnel on scene.
Fort Collins Police Services, Light and Power Department, Poudre Valley Hospital Ambulance Services and the Red Cross assisted at this incident.
The origin and cause is under investigation.
There is no dollar figure at this time and no reported injuries from this fire.
