On Friday 13th, 2007, at just before 6:00 am, the Quincy fire department struck a box for a house fire on Merrymount Avenue. First arriving companies, Engine 4 and Ladder 2, reported heavy smoke showing. A working fire was quickly ordered and a second alarm shortly after.
The fire quickly consumed the attic and roof of the 2 1/2 story home. Firefighters advanced handlines to the top floor and attic while also trying to protect the exposure. As conditions deteriorated, all firefighters were ordered out of the building and began a defensive attack. Both Ladder 2 and Ladder 5 put their ladder pipes into operation.
It was learned that a cab driver who was passing by noticed smoke coming from the house and alerted the tenants inside. All eleven occupants of the home escaped without injuries. Two family members were rescued from the roof over ladders after the stairwell was inaccessible.
Note: Boston responded both to the fire and for coverage on the mutual aid.
