One man is dead, another man is in grave condition and a third person is in stable condition after a devastating motor vehicle accident last night.
Just before 10:30 p.m., Sunday November 12, units from the District of Columbia Fire Department along with the department's collapse team responded to the 600 block of Florida Ave NW for a reported vehicle into a building.
When units arrived on the scene they found a SUV into a two-story rowhouse and a vehicle accident with one person ejected and two others trapped.
All three of the department's rescue squads responded because of the extensive damage to the vehicles and structure. According to Alan Etter, fire department spokesman, firefighters from Rescue Squad 1 and 2 freed the two trapped victims within 15 minutes. They were taken to a trauma center. An adult male was a trauma code and the second victim suffered neck and back injuries.
A third person who was ejected from a vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prior to units arriving on the scene D.C. Fire/EMS EMT Robert Raymer was off duty and witnessed the accident with his girlfriend. She is a volunteer EMS worker at Wheaton Rescue Squad in Montgomery County, MD.
Raymer stated that the SUV had been traveling westbound on Florida Ave along with the smaller sedan and slammed into the rear of the sedan pushing to car into a utility pole. The SUV then jumped the curb and slammed into the rowhouse.
Raymer ran over to the SUV and was able to pull the driver out, who was not injured. Raymer and his girlfriend then provided first aid to the two people who were trapped in the small sedan.
At the time of the accident a resident was inside the rowhouse. He was unharmed.
Sergeant Joe Gentile says 23-year-old Jesus Flores has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Flores was the driver of the SUV and Gentile says additional charges are pending.
Gentile says the passenger who was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene was identify as Yonas Gebrehi from Mount Rainer, MD.
