On Tuesday October 24th 2006 the Detroit Fire Department dispatched a Box Alarm at aprox. 15:40 Hrs at Vinewood and Toledo for a fire in a commercial building.
Upon arrival of Engine Co. 10 they reported a 150 X 300 4 story brick vacant commercial building with 3rd Floor going throughout. Before arrival Battalion Chief 7 requested a extra engine above the box alarm, and on arrival of Chief 7 an extra Engine and Squad was requested along with a Platform. Then a full Second Alarm was requested.
There were heavy fire conditions on 3rd and 4th floor of the building. Fire eventually extended throughout the building. There was also a possible Hazmat that was reported due to poly-carbons and cleaning solvents and paint believed to be stored in the building the HAZMAT Team set up monitors in the area and a shelter in place order was issued. The HAZMAT team later determined that there was no hazard and order was lifted.
The fire was brought under control using defensive operations due to building conditions. Using 2 Aerial Platforms and 4 Ladder Pipes and several hand lines.
Relief companies were ordered every four hours for companies on the scene working throughout the night and next morning. The cause of the fire in unknown at this time.
