Johnston, RI- On the afternoon of May 4, 2004, Johnston, RI firefighters responded to 17 Mill Street for a reported house fire. Engine 1 pulled out of their station and reported heavy smoke was showing from that area. They arrived to find a 2 bay, detached garage fully involved with extension to the nearby home and two vehicles.
Firefighters stretched a line and knocked down the fire that had extended to the house and then began knocking down the fire in the garage. Members of Ladder 1 reported that there was no extension to the interior of the house.
A 92 year old female resident of the house was complaining of chest pains and was transported by a Providence rescue to a local hospital. It took approximately 20 minutes for firefighters to bring the fire under control.
