On April 30, 2004, at 3:16 pm, a Keene, Texas volunteer fire lieutenant heard a crash while at home. A major intersection is about 2 blocks from his home.
He arrived on the scene to find an SUV upside down and the driver in serious condition from a head-on collision. He radioed the Keene Volunteer Fire Department dispatch for an air ambulance, the Keene Volunteer Fire Department ambulance, and an engine company. He also requested mutual aid from the Cleburne Fire Department.
The SUV was northbound on FM2280 and made a left hand turn directly in front of a pick-up, which was traveling southbound at approximately 60 mph. The pick-up did not have time to apply brakes.
The Cleburne, Texas Fire Department assisted in setting up a loading zone for the CareFlite air ambulance, which transported the SUV driver. The pick-up driver was transported by CareFlite ground ambulance.
The major intersection was closed for approximately 30 minutes for the loading of the air ambulance.
