A dramatic rescue scene in the nation's capital played out for hundreds of Metro subway riders and passerby Friday, April 30th, when a man's foot became trapped in an escalator at the busy Foggy Bottom Metro station.

D.C. firefighters arriving on the rescue local around 7 PM found the victim at the top of the escalator on 23rd Street N.W. Alert bystanders had hit the emergency stop button on the mechanism, but not before the person's foot became severely pinned between the moving steps and the upper lip of the device.

Firefighters from Rescue Squad 1, assisted by Truck 2 and Engine 23, under the command of the 6th Battalion, worked feverishly with a variety of rescue tools to free the victim. As these efforts were in progress, numerous EMS personnel worked to keep the patient stabilized with oxygen and IV's. Emergency room personnel from George Washington University Hospital, only a few yards from the incident scene, also stood by to assist.

After an approximately 20 minute struggle, the foot was finally released, and the victim rushed into the ER at GW Hospital, to be treated for his traumatic injuries.
