After a quiet day, Stafford, Virginia Fire Department members at Company 10 were watching television when communications received a call for a tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 95.

April 26, 2004 - After a quiet day, Stafford, Virginia Fire Department members at Company 10 were watching television when communications received a call for a tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 95. The accident occured just before the Aquia exit at 12:13 AM.

Chief 10-1 (Buck Abel) was behind the tractor trailer when it left the roadway and overturned between the bridge-supports and a hill.

Units from Company 10 arrived on the scene within minutes of being dispatched and began to evaluate the situation.

Squad 10's crew quickly began to cut the front windshield out of the truck to gain access to the patient. Engine 10's crew tried to secure the leaking fuel tanks from the truck while Squad 10 and Wagon 2 (Stafford VFD) removed the patient from the truck. Medic 9 (Aquia Harbour) treated the patient until the helicopter arrived.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for three hours while Company 10 and Haz-Mat 1 (Falmouth VFD) worked on the scene to contain over 100 gallons of diesel fuel. Chief 10 (Abel) had command. Company 10 units cleared the scene around 4:00 AM.
