On the morning of Sunday, Aug. 31, the Hempstead Fire Department received the report of a building fire on South Franklin Street.
While responding, units were advised by the dispatcher of multiple calls and people trapped. Arriving units found a two-story vacant, boarded up house with a heavy fire condition throughout and serious extension into apartments above a taxpayer next door.
Initial lines were stretched to the front of the fire building and the stairs to the apartments. Engine companies made good headway on the main body of fire while truck companies laddered the building and searched for occupants.
It was soon discovered that all residents had escaped safely to the street. Mutual aid companies were called to the scene to assist as were Nassau County Fire Marshals and Red Cross units.
There were no injuries reported at the scene.
