Vehicle Plunges Over Lake Erie Bluff

The victim was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition

Lake City, Penn. -- On Tuesday, August 19 at 1817, Lake City Fire Company was dispatched for a vehicle over the embankment at Lake Erie Community Park in Lake City.

Lake City Squad 577 was first to arrive on the scene and reported one vehicle approximately 100 feet down the embankment, which overlooks Lake Erie. Deputy Chief 571 assumed command. Lake City Engine 563 and Rescue 579 arrived on the scene. Girard Fire Department was dispatched for a Rescue and Squad to assist, Fairview Fire Department was dispatched for their Technical Rescue Team, and West County Paramedics for an ALS unit. Lake Shore Fire Department was placed on stand-by.

Mutual aid crews arrived on scene and set up rigging to conduct a rope rescue. Crews descended down to the vehicle. The vehicle was lodged against a group of trees. Crews found one patient ejected from the vehicle unconscious with injuries. Lifestar Helicopter was requested. Patient was evaluated, packaged and secured in a stokes basket.

Lifestar landing zone was established at Lake City Fire Company Station 57, their crew was brought to the incident scene because of the extended extrication from the embankment.

Patient was brought to the top of the embankment and evaluated by paramedics and Lifestars crew. Girard FD Squad transported patient to the Landing zone. Patient was loaded into helicopter and transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Crews remained on scene for about an hour cleaning up gear and watching the vehicle be pulled up by a tow truck. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident.
