At approximately 9 p.m. on June 5, the City of New London, Conn. Fire Department was dispatched to 18 Walden Avenue for a structure fire.
An assignment of two engines, one truck and one ambulance were sent. Upon arrival, Battalion 3 reported a three-story house with heavy fire showing from the first, second and third floors with exposure problems.
A second alarm was transmitted that brought the remaining New London Fire department apparatus of one engine, one truck and one ambulance, and also brought in mutual aid to cover New London's three firehouses.
The building was determined to be a vacant building under renovation upon arrival by Battalion 3. A defensive operation commenced and numerous handlines were stretched and aerial master streams were put into operation.
Two hours later the fire was deemed under control and overhaul continued. One exposure building sustained damage to the outside of the building but was saved by firefighters. The fire marshal's office is still investigating the incident. No injuries were sustained.
