Woonsocket, R.I. firefighters battled a stubborn blaze on May 18 in a three-story apartment on Pond Street at the East School Street intersection.
The bulk of the heavy fire tore through the third floor and attic area. Twenty minutes into the incident firefighters were ordered to evacuate the building due to the intense fire conditions in the attic and signs of a failing roof structure.
Shortly after firefighters were evacuated the roof collapsed on all four sides and into the building.
It was reported that the fire was possibly fueled by gas; however this cause is under investigation.
There was no known reported injuries; to firefighters or civilians. Several people however, were displaced from their homes.
