Holyoke, Mass. fire crews battled a two-alarm fire on Saturday, April 19 at 8:30 p.m. Crews were dispatched to the area of South East St. and Sergeant St. in the southern section of the city.
At the time of the fire, all Holyoke fire companies were either engaged or returning from two brush fires which had broken out earlier in the day. Due to this, the first alarm response was scaled down from two engines and one truck to one of each.
Upon arrival, the crew of Engine 2 reported they had a four-story vacant apartment building fully involved on all floors. The fire eventually spread to a single story garage on the C side of the structure and also to a 1 and 1/2 story vacant wood frame dwelling D side of the garage and leveled all three structures.
Firefighters from Holyoke Engine Companies 1, 2, 5, 6 and Truck Companies 1 and 2 along with mutual aid from Chicopee, Mass. Engine 5 operated on scene for two hours before the fire was under control.
A detail assignment of one Holyoke engine company remained on scene throughout the night wetting down the smoldering debris.
