On Monday, April 29 at 5:21 a.m., the Delmar and Salisbury fire departments were alerted for a building fire at the old Bonanza building on Bi-State Boulevard.
74 Command, with 1st Assistant Chief J. Morris Jr., arrived on the scene and reported fire coming from the roof area. Engine 74-3 laid a five-inch supply line from the nearest hydrant and advanced a 1 3/4-inch line into the structure.
The building was filled with heavy smoke throughout and crews used a thermal imaging camera to try and locate the fire. Truck 74 arrived and raised its aerial ladder to the roof to begin ventilation.
Engine 16-1 from Salisbury arrived and stretched a second 1 3/4-inch line from Engine 74-3 to backup the interior crews that were already inside. Tower 81 (Laurel) utilized their tower to get their company to the roof to help Truck 74 with ventilation. Crews from Hebron (Station 5), Parsonsburg (Station 6) and Gumboro (Station 79) were special called to assist with manpower.
Companies were on scene for two hours. The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
