    Five Departments Called to Minn. Dwelling Fire

    Firefighters from multiple departments spent more than an hour chasing fire as it rapidly spread through a home in Columbia Heights on Feb. 15.

    Firefighters reported heavy fire showing from the Delta side of the one-story home with a walkout basement. 

    Crews from Brooklyn Park, Fridley, New Brighton and Saint Anthony Village responded to for assistance. 

    Crews remained on scene for several hours while openings walls, floors and ceiling to contain the fire.

    Sergeant David Stacy: “We heard a ‘crack’ and the floor gave way in what felt like a two-stage motion. First, the floor dropped an inch or two, followed a half-second later by a drop of about eight to 12 inches. It felt as if the floor had failed in the corner where we initially attacked the visible fire and the rest of the floor subsequently leaned toward that end.”
    Upon arrival, the chief reported heavy fire was venting from the first floor on sides Alpha and Bravo and fire was visible from the basement windows on sides Bravo and Delta.

    Photo 4 - Though conditions clearly exist on the first floor at this fire, the presence of any smoke from the basement (look at the A-D corner) should attract immediate attention.
