Multiple fire departments responded to a fire late on Feb. 24 at Gatza Marble Products Plant in Gaston County.
Firefighters from Tryonota, Agriculture Center, Hugh's Pond, Waco, and Crouse fire departments were dispatched to a commercial business fire about 11:30 p.m. A neighbor who was smelled the smoke called 911.
First units had reported heavy smoke showing and made multiple attempts to extinguish the blaze.
About 45 minutes into the fire fight, the flames reached a vat of resin in the rear of the building.
Fire crews were forced to evacuate the structure and minutes later the entire building was engulfed with flames.
A second alarm was called and the Gaston County Tanker Strike was dispatched bringing over 75 firefighters and an additional 13 tankers to assist in the water shuttle. Approximately 80,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the flames.
Units remained on scene through late Monday afternoon. Firefighters dumped an additional 20,000 gallons Monday morning.
The Gaston County Fire Investigation Task Force is investigating the cause of the fire. There was no one in the building when the fire occured and no injuries to firefighters was reported
