There is a proposed code change to NFPA Standard 58 that might allow these containers to be used indoors with cabinet heaters.
Historically cylinders used for storage and use of propane gas were made from steel. Recently composite propane cylinders have entered the market place for running forklifts, home barbeque grills and other devices that use propane.
There is a proposed code change to NFPA Standard 58 coming up in June 2007 that might allow these containers to be used indoors with cabinet heaters. There are pros and cons as they relate to firefighter safety.
Greg Noll and Mike Hildebrand have written a white paper on the new composite cylinders that are entering the market. This paper was written heighten firefighter awareness of the characteristics of the cylinders and to provide firefighters with information so they can make their own decisions concerning the code change.
