Possible Cyanide Exposure Hospitalizes TN Firefighters, Medics

July 31, 2020
While Mt. Juliet firefighters and medics were treating an unconscious man for an apparent overdose, a "hazardous chemical"—potassium cyanide—"used to facilitate a suicide" was found, police said.

Five Tennessee firefighters and medics and two police officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution after potentially being exposed to a "hazardous chemical" Thusday.

Mt. Juliet crews responded to the death of a man behind the library after 11:30 a.m., WSMV-TV reports. When firefighters arrived, they discovered an unconscious man who was not breathing and used naloxone, believing the man had overdosed.

At the scene, police found a bottle of potassium cyanide. Later, investigators said "the hazardous chemical was used to facilitate a suicide," the police department told WSMV.

Three firefighters, two medics and two police officers were taken to the hospital after possibly being exposed to the cyanide. Police told WSMV that the first responders were not harmed, and they were hospitalized as a precaution.
