Boston Firefighters Decontaminated in Hazmat Station Scare

May 18, 2021
A Level 3 hazardous materials incident was declared after a man delivered an unknown chemical to a fire station in the city's Roslindale neighborhood.

A Boston man was delivered a package late Monday with an unknown chemical inside, causing a Level 3 hazmat incident and the decontamination of residents as well as firefighters, news outlets reported.

A resident brought the unknown chemical to the Boston firehouse at 945 Canterbury St. in Roslindale. Fire crews were investigating the hazmat incident around 9:30 p.m., the Boston Fire Department wrote in a tweet.

Four residents and two firefighters were decontaminated. No illnesses were reported. All six individuals were taken to the hospital by Boston EMS as a precautionary measure, according to the department.

NBC Boston reported a man who lives on Brook Street opened the package delivered to his home earlier Monday, discovered the chemical inside and then brought it to the fire station on Canterbury Street.

The package stayed outside and was never brought into the station, according to NBC Boston.

Brook Street residents were told to evacuate their homes for multiple hours, the news outlet reported.

Police are now involved in the investigation.

Authorities didn’t say what the chemical was. No further details were released Tuesday morning.
