GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. --

A worker was injured when he fell approximately about 20 feet inside a manhole at a construction site for the new Kroger store in the 500 block of Dacula Road near Fence Road in Dacula.

Firefighters responded to the incident on Thursday around 11:00 a.m.

The man was found to be conscious and alert and was able to communicate with rescuers. He showed signs of slight hypothermia and had obvious injuries to the lower extremities, according to reports.

Because of the instability at the top of the concrete structure, firefighters were not able to bring the man out the top of the pipe. They used a second means of egress from an adjoining 48-inch concrete pipe.

Firefighters from the technical rescue team deployed a rope system and rescue Sked to remove the victim.

The man was transferred to a traditional stretcher and placed in a waiting ambulance for further medical evaluation and transport. He was taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center in stable condition.

Preliminary information indicates that the man is a supervisor with Appling Brothers Excavating and Grading Company. He was reportedly climbing on a ladder inside the structure when the incident occurred.
